24-4-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) In a pivotal move for the budget airline group, AirAsia’s charismatic Chief Executive Officer, Tony Fernandes, announced on Wednesday that he has agreed to shelve his retirement plans and has inked a new five-year contract to continue leading the company. This decision comes as a significant departure from his earlier statement in January, where he had expressed his intention to retire within the next five years.
Addressing reporters, Fernandes revealed that the decision to renew his contract was made following requests from the company’s board for him to remain at the helm. “Retirement plans had to be put on hold to ensure we survive,” he candidly stated, underscoring the pressing need for his continued leadership during this critical juncture.
