24-4-2024 (KYIV) As tensions continue to escalate between Russia and Ukraine, the commander of Ukraine’s National Guard, Oleksandr Pivnenko, cautioned on Tuesday that Russian troops could launch an unexpected summer offensive in Ukraine, targeting unconventional areas along the front lines, including the northeastern city of Kharkiv.
Despite enduring relentless missile and drone attacks in recent weeks, Ukraine’s second-largest city remains steadfast, with Kyiv’s forces poised to repel any potential assault, Pivnenko assured.
In an interview with the Ukrainian news outlet Liga.net, Pivnenko stressed the importance of readiness, acknowledging that the enemy might spring unpleasant surprises by operating in unforeseen regions. However, he expressed confidence in Ukraine’s ability to thwart the adversary’s advances, asserting, “It will not achieve its goal.”
The Russian military has been gradually advancing in eastern Ukraine. Nevertheless, long-awaited U.S. military aid, anticipated to be approved this week and promptly dispatched to Ukraine, is poised to alleviate critical ammunition shortages and bolster air defences.
With expectations of a potential Russian offensive looming in late spring or summer, Ukrainian officials are on high alert, particularly regarding the strategically significant eastern town of Chasiv Yar, targeted by Moscow in its quest for dominance by May 9, Soviet Victory Day in World War Two.
While Pivnenko acknowledged anticipated challenges for Kyiv’s troops, he remained resolute, affirming that Russian forces would not achieve decisive gains. He estimated that they might fulfill only a fraction of their objectives, amounting to “10-15%,” falling short of a strategic victory.
In the face of continued assaults on Kharkiv’s critical infrastructure, already ravaged by Russian strikes, Pivnenko anticipated sustained bombardment but ruled out the possibility of the city falling into Russian hands.
