23-4-2024 (BANGKOK) Thailand saw a surge in foreign tourist arrivals during the extended Songkran festival, with 1.92 million visitors gracing the country’s vibrant celebrations from April 1 to 21. Official data revealed a significant 37.54 percent increase compared to the previous year, injecting vitality into Thailand’s crucial tourism sector.
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports disclosed that the 21-day Songkran festivities generated a revenue of 140.33 billion baht (approximately 3.78 billion U.S. dollars), as enthusiastic crowds, both local and international, partook in the traditional festivities spread across the Southeast Asian nation.
China emerged as the top source of inbound tourists during this period, witnessing an impressive 89.16 percent surge from the previous year, with 395,830 visitors. Following closely were Malaysia, India, Russia, and South Korea, with substantial numbers contributing to Thailand’s tourism tapestry.
The boost in tourist numbers was attributed to the government’s initiatives to streamline travel, such as the visa-free entry scheme and simplified immigration processes. The recent mutual visa exemption agreement between Thailand and China further fuelled confidence in cross-border travel.
The Songkran festival, recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity, captivates visitors with its water-themed festivities. This year’s enhanced celebrations showcased Thailand’s rich culture and traditions, attracting global attention and cementing the nation’s reputation as a premier host for world-class events, stated Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol.
With over 11.29 million foreign tourists already arriving in Thailand this year, the country is on track to meet its annual target of 35 million visitors, according to ministry data. Before the pandemic, Chinese tourists constituted a significant portion of Thailand’s tourism influx, contributing to approximately 28 percent of the nearly 40 million foreign tourists in 2019. Tourism remains a pivotal driver of Thailand’s economic growth, accounting for approximately 12 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP).
