23-4-2024 (JAKARTA) President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will commence the process of transferring power to president-elect Prabowo Subianto following the Constitutional Court’s ruling affirming the latter’s election triumph.
“The government stands ready and will fully support the transition to the incoming president and vice president,” stated Ari Dwipayana, the presidential special staff coordinator, on Monday.
Ari affirmed that Jokowi respects the court’s decision regarding the presidential election results dispute, as the verdict is final and binding.
In addition to preparing for the presidential transition, the government remains committed to implementing all of its agendas until the conclusion of Jokowi’s presidential term in October 2024, Ari added.
On Monday, the Constitutional Court dismissed in its entirety the challenges to the presidential election results filed by the other two candidate pairs: Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud M.D.
The much-anticipated election dispute verdict was delivered by Chief Justice Suhartoyo on Monday afternoon, following the conclusion of court hearings on April 16 and the justices’ deliberations on April 21.
The court ruled that the challenges lodged by Anies-Muhaimin and Ganjar-Mahfud, seeking to annul Prabowo and Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s victory, were not legally substantiated.
Five out of the eight justices voted against the challenges, while three justices—Saldi Isra, Enny Nurbaningsih, and Arief Hidayat—offered dissenting opinions. Justice Anwar Usman, Gibran’s uncle, recused himself from the ruling due to concerns over a potential conflict of interest.
Both plaintiffs had urged the Constitutional Court to nullify General Elections Commission (KPU) Decision No. 360 of 2024, which declared Prabowo and Gibran as the candidates with the highest number of votes in the recent presidential election.
They had also petitioned the court to disqualify the Prabowo-Gibran pair and order a repeat election without their participation.
