22-4-2024 (BANGKOK) A chemical waste warehouse in Rayong’s Bang Butr subdistrict was engulfed in flames on Monday morning, sending thick columns of black smoke billowing into the sky and prompting a massive firefighting operation.
According to police reports, the warehouse caught fire at approximately 9 am, and as of press time, firefighters were still struggling to contain the blaze. Locals in the area reported hearing sporadic explosions since the fire broke out, adding to the chaos and concern.
In a desperate attempt to bring the situation under control, a staggering 40 firefighters and 11 fire trucks, seven of which were equipped with foam-shooting capabilities, were deployed to the scene. However, even with this substantial force, the fire remained uncontrolled as of 10:45 am, with the flames continuing to rage.
Recognizing the potential for injuries and the need for immediate medical assistance, five ambulances were dispatched to the area, standing by to provide emergency care if required.
The Rayong pollution control office, cognizant of the potential environmental impact, had its officials measure the air quality in the nearby Moo 8 and Moo 11 villages, fearing that the air could become contaminated with burned chemical particles. While the air pollution level was initially deemed safe, the office took precautionary measures by temporarily evacuating residents of Moo 8 village, where the warehouse is located, to a nearby temple.
The incident has raised concerns among local authorities and residents alike, with the thick black smoke serving as a visible reminder of the potential hazards posed by chemical waste storage facilities. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire once it is fully extinguished and the area is deemed safe.
