13-4-2024 (PHNOM PENH) A grim discovery shook Cambodia as authorities uncovered the body of a 31-year-old casino dealer with a fatal gunshot wound to the head on Wednesday (10 April). The victim was found concealed in a suitcase, prompting swift action from law enforcement.
Reports from The Cambodia China Times indicate that the suspect, also 31 and of Taiwanese nationality, has been apprehended in connection with the crime. Prior to the tragic incident, the two individuals engaged in a heated argument, leading to dire consequences.
The accused, identified as Lin, allegedly arranged a meeting with the victim, Mr Liu, at a hotel near a riverside in Phnom Penh on 5 April. During this encounter, Lin purportedly borrowed 2 million Thai Baht (equivalent to approximately S$74,400) from Mr Liu for usury purposes. However, tensions escalated, culminating in Lin fatally shooting Mr Liu in the temple.
In a bid to conceal the crime, Lin then concealed Mr Liu’s body in a suitcase and transported it to another hotel approximately 300 metres away from the initial scene. The police investigation unearthed a chilling detail: two days following the murder, Mr Liu’s family received a WeChat message alleging his kidnapping and demanding a ransom of USD40,000 (equivalent to approximately S$54,200).
Armed with crucial evidence, including footage of Lin transporting the suitcase to the second hotel, authorities swiftly located and apprehended him. Upon searching the premises, they discovered the black suitcase containing Mr Liu’s remains, along with a firearm and four bullets.
Currently, the victim’s body awaits formal identification by his relatives as the investigation into this harrowing incident unfolds.
