12-4-2024 (SINGAPORE) Shoppers and pedestrians along the iconic Orchard Road were treated to an unexpected spectacle on Thursday as a burst water pipe sent a towering geyser of water gushing several metres skyward outside the *Scape mall. The authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the rupture, which occurred on a NEWater pipeline in a nearby construction site.
In a 47-second video circulated on social media, the sheer force of the water can be seen, with the geyser reaching heights rivalling some of the nearby shopping centres. The dramatic scene unfolded at around 2:15 pm along 2 Orchard Link, prompting a swift response from Singapore’s national water agency, PUB.
Responding to queries from TODAY on Friday, a PUB spokesperson confirmed that the agency had been alerted to a “pipe leak” in the construction site and immediately dispatched a service crew to the location. “The leak has been isolated. Repair works are ongoing,” the spokesperson stated, adding that investigations into the cause of the rupture are underway.
The sight of the towering geyser, a stark contrast to the typically well-maintained and orderly surroundings of Orchard Road, quickly drew crowds of onlookers and sparked a flurry of activity on social media, with videos and images of the incident being widely shared.
While water main breaks are not uncommon in urban areas, the sheer scale and force of this particular rupture have raised questions about the integrity of the infrastructure in the area, particularly given the ongoing construction work in the vicinity.
