9-4-2024 (BANGKOK) A Thai woman has sparked outrage after a video of her vaping aboard a flight from Mae Fah Luang International Airport in northern Thailand went viral on Thai social media platforms.
The footage, captured by a fellow passenger, was discreetly recorded and subsequently shared on the Red Skull Twitter account on April 11. The video depicted the woman using an e-cigarette onboard the aircraft. The accompanying caption expressed dismay at her disregard for safety regulations, stating, “Vaping on the plane! Don’t know how she passed the screening counter at the airport. She smoked the e-cigarette without respect for the rules and other people’s safety. Such a shame! She gradually released the smoke under the face mask, so not many people noticed her action.”
The video swiftly drew attention from Thai netizens, with many expressing their disapproval in the comments section. Criticisms were directed not only at the smoker but also at the perceived negligence of airport authorities.
Mae Fah Luang International Airport Director Somchanok Tiantiabrat addressed the issue in an interview with Matichon, acknowledging the potential for e-cigarettes to evade detection during security checks due to their predominantly plastic composition.
Somchanok urged passengers witnessing such violations to report them immediately to cabin crew, facilitating coordination with destination airports to apprehend the offenders.
Authorities have identified the flight in question and intend to liaise with the airline to pursue legal action against the female passenger involved.
