9-4-2024 (BANGKOK) Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin refrained from confirming or denying speculations regarding a potential Cabinet reshuffle, asserting that the public will be informed when such changes occur. Speaking to journalists during a visit to the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat on Monday, the premier addressed recent rumours circulating about alterations in the government’s leadership.
Reports emerged last week, citing sources within the Pheu Thai party, suggesting that Srettha intends to reconfigure the Cabinet lineup in early June. Allegedly, this would involve reallocating a ministry portfolio held by Pheu Thai and a deputy minister’s position held by Bhumjaithai to the Democrat Party, should it join the coalition as anticipated.
At present, both Pheu Thai and the Palang Pracharath Party, coalition partners, retain one Cabinet seat each within their quota.
Srettha clarified that no coalition partner had formally discussed plans for a Cabinet reshuffle with him. He expressed his commitment to refrain from interfering in any decisions regarding appointments, even though he ultimately endorses them.
Regarding the remaining Cabinet seat within Pheu Thai’s quota, Srettha stated, “We still have one position left, but we will discuss it when it is time.” He indicated that decisions regarding appointments would be made by the respective parties.
When questioned about the possibility of Palang Pracharath filling its remaining quota, Srettha disclosed that discussions on this matter had not taken place with the party’s leadership. However, he affirmed his willingness to consider proposals brought forth by coalition partners.
Addressing concerns about potential discord within the coalition, particularly with Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul of the Bhumjaithai Party, Srettha emphasized a commitment to transparent and open communication. He disavowed antiquated political tactics, asserting that coalition partners were encouraged to engage directly with him.
The prime minister’s remarks come amidst speculation surrounding strained relations with Bhumjaithai, prompted by discussions surrounding drug policy and Cabinet seat allocation.
