5-4-2024 (BANGKOK) Authorities have apprehended a 25-year-old student, identified as Suphanat, for allegedly producing and disseminating explicit images of celebrities using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
This arrest, which occurred on April 5, 2024, was carried out by the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) under the leadership of Police Major General Athip Pongsiwapai. The investigation stemmed from a prior case in March when an individual, claiming to be an educator offering AI manipulation courses, was detained by authorities.
Further probing revealed that this so-called teacher was orchestrating the creation of explicit images featuring well-known personalities. These images were then circulated within a private group, accessible only to paying members.
The police uncovered a network of individuals, including Suphanat, who were students of the aforementioned teacher and were engaging in similar activities. Utilizing readily available AI applications on their mobile devices, these individuals digitally altered images of artists, actors, and celebrities, removing their clothing to produce explicit content.
The CCIB team, comprising Police Colonel Chisanupong Hwaidi, Police Lieutenant Colonel Phubadee Empranit, and Police Lieutenant Colonel Nawapol Patanibul, conducted a raid on Suphanat’s residence in the Khao Kansong area of Si Racha District. During the operation, authorities seized crucial items including a notebook computer, a mobile phone, and a bankbook.
Upon interrogation, Suphanat confessed to editing the images for financial gain and admitted to sharing them within the private group. He disclosed that the altered images stored in a cloud system numbered over a thousand.
Following the evidence collected, Suphanat was taken into custody and transferred to the investigative officers of the CCIB’s 3rd division for further legal proceedings, according to reports from KhaoSod.
