27-3-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Tan Sri Azam Baki, the chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), has expressed his intention to delve deeper into the claims made by the two eldest sons of Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad regarding the commission’s investigations.
The MACC chief’s remarks came in response to recent statements by Mokhzani, 63, and his elder brother, Mirzan, 65, who asserted during an interview that they are not the primary targets of the commission’s probes, contrary to widespread speculation.
“Let me get a clearer picture first before I make any comments,” Azam Baki told reporters after the launch of the Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence (CCoE) in Putrajaya yesterday. When pressed further, the MACC chief refrained from commenting directly on the claims made by the two brothers.
During the interview, Mokhzani and Mirzan claimed that they were merely witnesses in the investigations, with their father, Dr. Mahathir, being the “primary suspect.” They also alleged that the MACC had not provided them with the details of the investigation against their father.
The ongoing investigations are believed to be linked to entities named in the Pandora Papers and the Panama Papers, which the MACC has been probing since August 2022.
In January, Mokhzani and Mirzan were ordered by the MACC to declare their assets dating back to 1981, the year Dr. Mahathir became prime minister. They were initially given 30 days to comply with the order but were later granted a 30-day extension by the MACC, owing to the extensive nature of their assets.
