24-3-024 (MANILA) Tensions escalated between China and the Philippines after China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels blocked and used water cannons against Philippine vessels near Ayungin Shoal, prompting a stern warning from Beijing.
The incident occurred as Philippine vessels attempted to deliver personnel and supplies to the BRP Sierra Madre, a World War II ship deliberately grounded in Ayungin Shoal, within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) known as the West Philippine Sea.
China’s foreign ministry spokesperson accused the Philippines of intruding into what China refers to as Ren’ai Jiao, part of its Nansha Qundao territory. The CCG intervened to “safeguard” China’s rights, employing dangerous tactics at sea, including using water cannons against Philippine vessels.
Despite damage inflicted on the resupply ship, troops and supplies managed to reach the Sierra Madre via rigid-hulled inflatable boats. China reiterated its sovereignty over the area, warning the Philippines to halt its actions to avoid escalating tensions.
The Philippines’ National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS) condemned China’s actions as unprovoked aggression, urging restraint. National Security Adviser Eduardo Año seeks a meeting to address the situation.
In response, the Philippines affirmed its commitment to international law, including the 2016 Arbitral Award, asserting its rights over its maritime zones. The NTF-WPS called on China to demonstrate responsible behaviour, emphasizing the Philippines’ resolve to uphold its sovereignty.
The incident drew concern from international partners, including the United States, Japan, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Australia, highlighting the need for de-escalation and adherence to international norms.
