21-3-2024 (BANGKOK) In a significant operation led by Kanchanaburi’s Thong Pha Phum police, together with immigration officers and other relevant agencies, authorities successfully thwarted an illegal immigration smuggling operation in Thailand. The operation, conducted on March 20, resulted in the apprehension of 66 individuals and the seizure of four vehicles, marking a notable breakthrough in Thailand’s efforts to combat illegal immigration.
According to a report from the police, officers on patrol duty observed four pickup trucks behaving suspiciously during a routine assignment. Upon noticing the police presence, the drivers attempted to evade inspection by speeding away. However, undeterred officers pursued them to a rubber plantation in Thong Pha Phum, where the trucks were eventually located and intercepted.
Upon closer examination, authorities discovered 66 individuals from Myanmar concealed inside the four vehicles. Regrettably, the drivers managed to evade capture by fleeing into the surrounding area. The individuals found in the vehicles admitted to illegally crossing the Thai border through a natural channel, with the intention of seeking employment in central Thailand, as reported by The Pattaya News.
Following the discovery, the Thong Pha Phum enquiry police escorted the individuals for further legal processing. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Myanmar, particularly amidst a mandatory conscription policy and escalating conflicts between the military junta and various groups.
