19-3-2024 (SINGAPORE) In the realm of physical fitness, age is often considered a limiting factor. However, 78-year-old Charlotte Wong from Singapore is shattering stereotypes and inspiring awe with her remarkable strength and agility, proving that age is no barrier to leading an active lifestyle.
Charlotte’s journey towards fitness began later in life, following her retirement at the age of 57. Initially leading a sedentary lifestyle, she realized the importance of adopting healthier habits to combat health issues like high cholesterol. Motivated by her desire for better health, Charlotte embarked on a transformative fitness journey that has since become an inspiration to many.
The driving force behind Charlotte’s fitness transformation is her daughter, Yan Lin, founder of Bespoke Fitness, a gym and fitness centre in Singapore. Yan, along with her brother, devised a high-intensity workout regimen called FitRx, blending strength training and burst cardio, which Charlotte faithfully follows three times a week.
Despite initial doubts and challenges, Charlotte’s dedication to her fitness regimen has yielded remarkable results. From mastering push-ups to lifting weights and even conquering the elusive pull-up, Charlotte’s journey is a testament to the power of persistence and determination.
Yan recounts Charlotte’s gradual progression, from setting modest goals to achieving impressive milestones. “When she first started training with me four years ago, her modest goal was to be able to do one unassisted sit-up! Pull-ups were never her goal,” Yan shares. However, Charlotte’s perseverance paid off, culminating in her ability to perform five pull-ups with her body weight alone and two pull-ups with an additional 5kg weight.
Charlotte’s remarkable achievements extend beyond her personal fitness goals. She is set to represent Singapore in the Rejuvenation Olympics, an international event that evaluates participants’ ageing process. Her participation not only symbolizes personal triumph but also serves as a source of national pride.
For Yan, the journey towards fitness took on greater significance following her father’s untimely death at 69 due to a heart attack. Determined to promote preventive health measures, Yan and her brother established Bespoke Fitness in 2016, advocating for holistic well-being encompassing exercise, nutrition, and rest.
Reflecting on her own fitness journey, Yan emphasizes the value of professional guidance, urging individuals to seek the support of a coach. “For people struggling with their fitness journey, I recommend getting a coach to begin with. There is too much misinformation online that is hard to filter through,” Yan advises, highlighting the importance of structure and accountability in achieving fitness goals.
