14-3-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Authorities have taken swift action to rescue victims of labour exploitation and apprehend illegal immigrants following a raid on a factory processing electrical components in Teluk Panglima Garang, Kuala Langat, Selangor.
The Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Division’s Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act (Atipsom) 2007 Unit D3, led by Principal Assistant Director SAC Soffian Santong, spearheaded the operation. Two teenagers, both aged 17 and believed to be from Myanmar, were rescued during the raid, which took place at 12:45 pm on Wednesday (March 13).
SAC Soffian disclosed that the factory, which had been operating without a business license for approximately 18 months, employed 17 illegal immigrants hailing from China, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. Initial investigations revealed that these workers were paid between RM1,200 to RM1,300 per month and were subjected to strict control over their movements. They were required to work six days a week from 8 am to 9 pm and were prohibited from leaving the premises.
“The two teenagers and the illegal immigrants will be detained at the Kuala Langat police headquarters for further investigation,” stated SAC Soffian.
Authorities will be pursuing the case under various legal provisions, including Section 14 of the Atipsom Act 2007, Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, Section 55B of the Immigration Act 1959/63, and Section 39(B) of the Immigration Regulations 1963.
