4-3-2024 (SINGAPORE) In an incident at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex, a Singaporean man in his 50s was apprehended attempting to enter Malaysia illicitly. Johor Customs Department director Aminul Izmeer Mohd Sohaimi disclosed that the man was discovered concealed inside the boot of a Malaysian-registered car around 3.30 pm on December 13 last year.
“The car was flagged for inspection due to its unusual weight distribution at the back. Upon opening the boot, we found a man inside. Remarkably, the individual had no travel documents on his person at the time of arrest,” stated Aminul.
The director further detailed that two Malaysian women in their 20s were also detained for aiding the illegal entry. According to the investigation, the Singaporean man had reportedly paid SGD3,000 (RM10,555) to the local women to facilitate his unlawful entry into Malaysia.
Elaborating on the background, Aminul Izmeer mentioned that the Singaporean individual faced legal issues in his home country, preventing him from obtaining a passport. Subsequently, all three individuals were charged at the Johor Bahru court under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Section 26J of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Act 2007.
“The Singaporean man has served his sentence in our prison and returned to his home country in the middle of February,” added Aminul Izmeer during a press conference held at the Customs Sungai Pulai Enforcement Complex on Monday (March 4).
