29-2-2024 (MANILA) Filipino representative Joey Salceda expressed disapproval of Singapore’s alleged exclusive deal for the Taylor Swift ‘The Eras Tour’ concerts. Salceda claimed that the Singapore government had reportedly granted concert promoter Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) around US$3 million for regional exclusivity.
Salceda criticized the move, stating that it goes against the principles of good neighborly relations. He emphasized that the alleged deal comes at the expense of neighboring countries, which miss out on the economic benefits and opportunities such a big concert could bring.
Acknowledging the economic gains for Singapore, Salceda estimated that demand for hotels and airlines in the country rose by about 30%, generating an additional revenue of approximately US$60 million. Despite recognizing the positive outcome for Singapore, Salceda urged the Philippines to enhance efforts to attract such events, emphasizing the role of agencies like the Tourism Promotions Board.
While emphasizing the good relations between Singapore and the Philippines, Salceda called on the Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to seek an explanation from the Singapore Embassy in Manila regarding the alleged exclusive deal. He argued that the move contradicts the principles of consensus-based relations and solidarity on which ASEAN was founded.
Highlighting the importance of registering opposition, Salceda urged the authorities not to let such matters pass, emphasizing the need for transparency and fair practices in the region.
