29-2-2024 (MANILA) Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos addressed the Australian parliament on Thursday, describing his country as being on the “frontline” of the battle for regional peace. Seeking support in the face of maritime disputes with China, Marcos expressed resolve in defending his nation’s sovereignty.
Amid reports of Beijing’s warships detected near Philippine waters, Marcos informed Australian lawmakers that his country is at the forefront against actions undermining regional peace and stability. He emphasized the critical role the Philippines plays in addressing challenges to regional success.
“I will not allow any attempt by any foreign power to take even one square inch of our sovereign territory,” Marcos declared, earning applause. He assured that despite formidable challenges, the Philippines’ resolve is equally formidable, and they will not yield.
Recent reports from Philippine authorities revealed the presence of Chinese navy vessels around the Scarborough Shoal, an area seized by Beijing in 2012. China’s claims over the shoal and extensive parts of the South China Sea have faced regional objections and an international tribunal ruling against their legal basis. The deployment of warships by China is considered a new and concerning development by Marcos.
The South China Sea holds strategic importance for multiple countries, serving as a vital route for importing and exporting essential goods. The Philippines, along with other nations supported by the United States, advocates for the freedom and openness of the waterway.
China has significantly expanded its naval forces in recent years, aiming to extend military and political influence beyond its shores. Marcos stressed the importance of protecting the South China Sea as a critical global artery for regional and global peace.
