23-2-2024 (SEOUL) South Korea has elevated its health alert level as of Friday morning in response to a widespread strike by thousands of doctors protesting the government’s proposal to increase medical school admissions. The health ministry declared the shift from a cautious to a severe healthcare disaster risk alert, citing an escalating walkout by resident doctors and expressing concerns about the impact on public health.
The protest, led by almost two-thirds of the country’s young doctors, has left emergency departments in major hospitals strained. The demonstration is in opposition to the government’s plan to boost medical school admissions, aimed at reinforcing the healthcare sector. The walkout, however, has led to the rejection of patients and the cancellation of medical procedures, raising concerns about potential disruptions if the dispute prolongs.
In response to the escalating situation, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo is scheduled to preside over a disaster management meeting on Friday. The protesting doctors argue that the core issue is not the number of physicians but rather concerns over pay and working conditions.
