21-2-2024 (JAKARTA) Indonesia is currently in the process of constructing two underground stacked stations for the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system in Jakarta. These stations, located between the Sawah Besar and Mangga Besar areas in central Jakarta, are part of the MRT Phase 2A project.
According to Weni Maulina, the Director of Construction at PT MRT Jakarta, these stations will be the first of their kind in Indonesia. Both stations are being built at a depth of 28 meters below ground level and share the same design.
The decision to implement stacked platforms and tunnels stems from the limited space available in these areas, explained Maulina.
Sawah Besar Station and Mangga Besar Station will each consist of four floors, with separate levels for the north and south lines. This design ensures efficient and organized passenger flow.
Construction on the MRT Phase 2A project, which encompasses the Harmoni-Sawah Besar-Mangga Besar line, commenced on June 25, 2022. As of January 25, 2024, the project has reached a progress milestone of 25.54 percent.
The 5.8-kilometer route connects Bundaran HI Station in downtown Jakarta with Kota Station in West Jakarta, passing through five stations: Monas, Harmoni, Sawah Besar, Mangga Besar, and Glodok.
The construction process is divided into two segments. The first segment, from Bundaran HI to Harmoni, is targeted for completion in 2027. The second segment, from Harmoni to Kota, is expected to be completed in 2029.
The project carries a total cost of Rp22.5 trillion (approximately US$1.44 billion) and is being funded jointly by the governments of Indonesia and Japan.
