16-2-2024 (BANGKOK) A Chinese-Cambodian national, wanted in China for orchestrating a sports-related fraud scheme resulting in approximately 2.5 billion baht in damages, was apprehended in the Sathon district of Bangkok, according to immigration police.
The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Huang Min, was arrested in the Thung Mahamek area on Thursday. The arrest followed a warrant issued by the Criminal Court on Feb 8 for the extradition of a foreign criminal.
Huang Min, holding dual Chinese-Cambodian nationality, was the subject of the arrest request from the Chinese embassy in Bangkok, seeking Thailand’s cooperation in apprehending the suspect and facilitating his return to China for trial on charges of public fraud.
Chinese authorities filed a lawsuit against Huang Min on July 20 last year after discovering that he and his accomplices utilized the “Wanhe Football” gambling platform to deceive individuals in China into investing in a fraudulent sports-related scheme. Operating under the group name “Zhonghe,” the suspects convinced victims to invest between March 2022 and April last year, resulting in damages totaling 500 million yuan or around 2.53 billion baht, as reported by the Immigration Bureau (IB) chief.
An arrest warrant for Huang Min was issued on Dec 9, and Chinese authorities subsequently found that he had fled to Thailand using a Cambodian passport. The collaborative efforts of authorities from both countries led to the suspect’s arrest, and he will be extradited to China to face trial.
