16-2-2024 (KANSAS) A quarrel among several individuals ignited a shooting spree in Kansas City, Missouri, resulting in the death of a woman and the injury of 22 people following the city’s NFL Super Bowl victory celebration, according to local police on Thursday (Feb 15). Authorities have ruled out any apparent link to extremism.
Police Chief Stacey Graves, speaking at a press conference, stated that three people, including two minors, have been detained as “subjects” in the ongoing investigation. However, the third detainee, also a juvenile who was found not to be involved, has since been released, as confirmed by police spokesperson Alayna Gonzalez.
Gonzalez explained that the police are collaborating with juvenile prosecutors to examine the evidence and determine the appropriate charges against the two minors who are still in custody.
Several firearms were recovered from the scene of the shooting, according to the police chief. She suggested that the violence was a result of a dispute among multiple individuals rather than a targeted attack, emphasizing that there is no indication of terrorism or homegrown violent extremism.
At this stage, the police have not provided further details about the origins of the initial clash or specific information about the shooting itself, including any potential involvement of gang activity.
The Super Bowl parade and rally held on Wednesday to celebrate the Chiefs’ victory over the San Francisco 49ers drew more than a million fans, according to Graves. As the event was concluding, the sound of gunshots sent the crowds scrambling for cover. Two attendees of the rally managed to tackle and detain one of the three suspects involved.
During Thursday’s briefing, the police updated the number of known gunshot victims to 23, ranging in age from 8 to 47. Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a popular local radio personality, was the sole fatality.
