14-2-2024 (BANGKOK) Thailand’s Pollution Control Department (PCD) has issued a warning about hazardous air pollution in all areas of Bangkok. The report has prompted calls for the implementation of remote work arrangements to combat the excessive levels of dust particles in the air.
In a statement, the PCD urged both private sector companies and state agencies to consider allowing their employees to work from home until the weekend. The department predicts that the PM 2.5 pollution in the Thai capital and its surrounding regions will worsen over the next two days due to air stagnation and an increase in fire hotspots.
On Wednesday, the PCD recorded levels of PM 2.5 pollutants ranging from 58-105 micrograms per cubic meter in the Bangkok metropolitan area. These levels are classified as unhealthy to very unhealthy for human health.
Governor Chadchart Sittipunt of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has also reached out to various agencies and corporate partners, urging them to adopt remote work arrangements for their employees on Thursday and Friday.
However, schools under the BMA will continue operating as usual. Precautionary measures, including the distribution of protective masks and the cancellation of outdoor activities if necessary, will be implemented to safeguard the health of students and staff members, according to a separate statement by Governor Chadchart.
