9-2-2024 (SINGAPORE) Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has encouraged young couples to consider starting a family during the auspicious Year of the Dragon in his annual Chinese New Year message. He emphasized the significance of the dragon as a symbol of power, strength, and good fortune, stating that it is an opportune time to welcome a “little dragon” into their families.
Singapore has witnessed a decline in its crude birth rate over the years, but there have been notable increases during dragon years, such as in 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, and 2012. The country’s total fertility rate has also fallen below the replacement level of 2.1, reaching a low of 1.04 in 2022.
PM Lee acknowledged that declining fertility rates are a global phenomenon, particularly in developed societies like Singapore. He acknowledged that personal aspirations and prioritizing careers and personal interests often take precedence over parenthood for many young individuals. However, he urged couples to consider the potential challenges of conceiving as they age and expressed his hope for more Singaporean couples to have children and start their families earlier.
To support aspiring parents, the government has implemented measures to enhance infant caregiving and promote work-life balance. Additionally, starting from January 1, the government has voluntarily doubled paternity leave from two to four weeks.
While these initiatives aim to alleviate the burdens of parenthood, PM Lee emphasized that the decision to have children ultimately rests with the couples themselves. He expressed confidence that parenthood is a deeply fulfilling and rewarding journey and encouraged more couples to embark on it.
PM Lee, who is a grandfather and a father of four, underscored the importance of raising children within the context of family life. He highlighted the joy and fulfillment that comes from observing children’s growth and milestones, not only for parents but also for grandparents who contribute to their upbringing.
As Singaporeans celebrate the Chinese New Year and embrace new beginnings, PM Lee urged people to cherish their families, which form the foundation of society. Families provide unwavering support, instill a sense of identity and purpose, and pass on values from one generation to the next.
