8-2-2024 (BANGKOK)Â The Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified on Thursday that the recent arrest of Cambodian activists during Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet’s official visit to Bangkok was carried out due to their actions being in contravention of Thai laws.
“Thailand upholds freedom of expression and opinion, but it must be in accordance with Thai law. The events during the Cambodian prime minister’s visit may be considered a violation of our statutes,” stated Chatchai Viriyavejakul, director-general of the ministry’s Department of East Asian Affairs.
“According to the immigration office, these activists have, at the very least, breached Thai immigration regulations.”
During their joint press conference, the Cambodian and Thai prime ministers concurred not to permit the use of each other’s country as a base for conducting illegal activities that could harm the other side.
In response to inquiries regarding whether the activists’ arrest would impact Thailand’s bid to secure a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2025-2027 term, Mr Chatchai asserted that these are distinct matters.
When questioned if the arrests could be seen as a utilisation of immigration law to facilitate transnational repression, he stated, “Thai authorities are handling the case in accordance with Thai regulations. If those arrested are not proven guilty under our laws, they will not face prosecution.
“As for claims suggesting this is against global principles, I believe those are subjective opinions that require further discussion. However, I would like to emphasise that Thai law enforcement is addressing the cases according to Thai laws,” Mr Chatchai added.
