31-1-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) In a momentous ceremony at the national palace in Kuala Lumpur, Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar was officially sworn in as Malaysia’s 17th king. This marks the first time Sultan Ibrahim has held the esteemed position, following in the footsteps of his father more than three decades later. The installation of the 65-year-old monarch has sparked optimism, as his evolving role raises hopes for progress in diplomacy and national unity.
The installation of Sultan Ibrahim as Malaysia’s Yang di-Pertuan Agong was met with an outpouring of support from the public. Thousands of people lined the streets of Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur to bid farewell and welcome the new king, demonstrating their anticipation for positive changes in the economy and overall national well-being.
The ceremony itself was a grand affair, steeped in centuries of tradition. Taking the oath of office in Kuala Lumpur’s national palace just before noon, Sultan Ibrahim appeared in the distinguished black uniform of the Johor Military Force. The lavish event was attended by numerous dignitaries, including Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who witnessed the signing of the letter of appointment that officially proclaimed Sultan Ibrahim as the Supreme Ruler, or Yang di-Pertuan Agong, for the next five years.
Sultan Ibrahim’s election as king took place in October 2023 during the Conference of Rulers, where the country’s nine sultans convene to determine the rotational monarchy system. Malaysia’s unique system ensures that each of the nine rulers takes turns serving as the king for five-year cycles. Sultan Ibrahim’s predecessor, Pahang ruler Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, concluded his term on January 30. Additionally, Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak, who was elected as the deputy king during the same meeting, also took the oath of office on this momentous day.
Prior to the installation ceremony, Johor Bahru marked Sultan Ibrahim’s departure with a royal send-off. Commencing from Bukit Serene Palace, his motorcade made its way to Senai Airport, covering a distance of 24 kilometers. Along the route, thousands of Johoreans lined the streets, waving the Johor state flag and chanting “Daulat Tuanku” (Long live the King) to express their enthusiasm and support for Sultan Ibrahim.
Among those present were members of the Southern Volunteers group, who had gathered outside the palace gates since early morning. Nur Fatin Athikah Abdul Hisham, a 23-year-old diploma student and member of the activist group, expressed her excitement to be part of this historic moment for Johor and Malaysia. She highlighted the significance of witnessing Sultan Ibrahim ascend to the throne, as it had been a long-awaited event for the younger generation.
As Malaysia’s new king, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar’s reign holds promise for the nation’s future. With his evolving role and the support of the people, there are high expectations for positive changes in diplomacy, unity, and the overall well-being of the country. The installation ceremony and the public’s overwhelming response reflect a renewed sense of hope and anticipation for a prosperous and harmonious Malaysia under the leadership of Sultan Ibrahim.
