30-1-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Malaysia has climbed four ranks and achieved a higher score in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2023, prompting the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to reaffirm its commitment to combating corruption in the country.
The improvement in Malaysia’s position in the CPI was attributed to the investigations and arrests conducted by the MACC in high-profile corruption cases over the past two years, according to Transparency International-Malaysia (TI-Malaysia), which announced the findings on Tuesday (Jan 30).
In a statement released on the same day, the MACC emphasized its role as the sole authority responsible for eradicating corruption and expressed its unwavering determination to prevent corruption, abuse of power, and any misappropriation of funds falling under its jurisdiction.
The MACC called for stronger political will and improved governance from all stakeholders to enhance anti-corruption strategies, with the goal of achieving Malaysia’s aspiration to be ranked 25th in the CPI by 2033.
TI-Malaysia’s report revealed that out of 180 countries assessed, Malaysia moved up to the 57th position in the CPI 2023, compared to its previous ranking of 61st. Additionally, Malaysia obtained a higher score of 50, an increase from the previous score of 47.
