30-1-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) A Malaysian man’s trip to Japan took a turn for the worse when he fell seriously ill after ingesting snow. The man, identified as Herman, suffered from severe fever and flu-like symptoms for eight days following his snow-eating escapade. The incident was captured in a TikTok video, where Herman can be seen taking multiple bites of a snowball.
Herman, who was visiting Yamagata, admitted that eating snow was an old habit of his dating back to his student days in the United Kingdom. However, this time, the experience ended in misery, and he warned others against following in his footsteps. Despite not requiring hospitalization, Herman’s ordeal serves as a cautionary tale about the potential health risks associated with consuming snow.
Health experts advise against eating snow due to its role as an air filter, collecting contaminants and dirt as it falls to the ground. Whether fresh or not, consuming snow can lead to stomachaches, bloating, and diarrhea. Snow with a yellow or brown tint should be especially avoided as it indicates a high level of pollutants.
