24-1-2024 (SINGAPORE) A 34-year-old Singaporean man has been charged with the attempted murder of his elderly mother by using a pillow to smother her while she slept. The incident allegedly took place on January 16, and the police were informed two days later.
The accused individual, Yong Chun Hong, has denied the allegations against him. At the prosecution’s request, he is currently awaiting a psychiatric assessment to determine his mental state. The elderly mother, fortunately, is in stable condition, according to the prosecution.
Reports suggest that on January 16, Yong pressed a pillow over his 77-year-old mother’s face while she was peacefully asleep. The assault came to light on January 18 when the police received a report regarding the incident at a residential unit in Serangoon Central.
Yong appeared in court on January 24 from his place of remand. He adamantly proclaimed his innocence and expressed a desire to see his mother. However, the prosecution rejected his request, considering the mother as the victim in this case.
Pending the psychiatric assessment, Yong has been remanded in Changi Prison’s Complex Medical Centre (CMC) for a period of three weeks. This assessment will determine if he was suffering from any mental abnormalities that may have impaired his responsibility for the alleged act.
The court has scheduled Yong’s next appearance for February 14. If found guilty of attempted murder resulting in harm, he could face either life imprisonment and caning or up to 20 years in jail along with a fine and caning.
