22-1-2024 (TEL AVIV) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has firmly rejected the conditions presented by Hamas to end the conflict and secure the release of hostages in Gaza. As Israeli airstrikes resumed in the southern Gaza Strip, Hamas insisted on Israel’s complete withdrawal and leaving the group in power. Netanyahu stated, “I reject outright the terms of surrender of the monsters of Hamas.”
The Israeli leader asserted that Hamas’ demands included ending the war, withdrawing Israeli forces from Gaza, and releasing individuals with criminal records. He emphasized that leaving Hamas intact was a condition he could not accept. Netanyahu declared, “There is no substitute for victory. Only total victory will ensure the elimination of Hamas and the return of all our hostages.”
In November, a deal brokered by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt led to the release of over 100 hostages out of an estimated 240 taken during a Hamas attack on October 7. Pressure has mounted on Netanyahu to secure the release of the remaining hostages, officially numbering 132. Families of the hostages demonstrated over the weekend, urging action to bring their loved ones home immediately.
Addressing the issue of Palestinian statehood, Netanyahu took a stronger stance, stating, “I will not compromise on full Israeli security control of all territory west of the Jordan River.” This comes in response to recent remarks by US President Joe Biden, suggesting possible solutions for the creation of an independent Palestinian state. Netanyahu reiterated his resistance to external pressures, emphasizing that his stance prevented the establishment of a Palestinian state that could pose an existential threat to Israel.
