20-1-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad voiced his frustration with the Malaysian justice system, alleging political victimization against himself and his family in a recent post.
Taking to X, Dr Mahathir expressed his discontent over Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s accusations of him possessing billions of ringgit, stemming from alleged abuse of power during his tenure as prime minister.
“I asked Anwar for proof of this statement, but he did not provide any. I then sued him for defamation against me,” he stated.
Dr Mahathir claimed that despite requesting evidence to be presented in court, a year had passed with no substantiation. He further asserted that the evidence was said to be with Petronas, which he alleged is under Anwar’s influence.
Rather than facing charges himself, Dr Mahathir contended that his son had been accused and threatened with imprisonment for five years if he acted against the prosecutor’s claims.
“On Jan 18, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission served businessman Mirzan Mahathir a notice to declare his assets within 30 days, following revelations from the Panama Papers and the Pandora Papers,” the former prime minister revealed.
Dr Mahathir pointed out that many government supporters, including Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Selayang MP William Leong Jee Keen, Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, and several businessmen, were named in the Pandora Papers. However, he claimed they have not been investigated or charged.
The former prime minister criticized the double standards, asserting that those in power, who once criticized authorities, are now behaving worse than their political opponents. He concluded, “If one offers support, they are a friend… even court trials can be halted. This is Reformasi.”
