17-1-2024 (SINGAPORE) Singaporean consumers have become accustomed to paying higher prices for disposable containers due to inflation. However, one recent incident on the Foodpanda app took the concept of container charges to an extreme.
A screenshot shared by a customer on Facebook on January 8 revealed that their meal order, which cost S$19.20, came with a mind-boggling S$27,958,344 worth of “container charges.” The exorbitant amount sparked astonishment among netizens.
The customer’s post has since been deleted as of January 17, but the order summary they shared showcased the S$19.20 meal cost, along with a delivery fee of S$2.09 and a platform fee of S$0.40, which are typical charges for a delivery order.
The standout, however, was the jaw-dropping “container charges” worth S$27.9 million. To put things into perspective, winning the S$12.8 million top prize in the Toto lottery twice would still fall short of covering such expenses.
In a lighthearted remark, the customer quipped that they must have been paying for an entire container vessel with the imposed charges, but at least they received a 25% discount.
Naturally, commenters raised doubts about the authenticity of the screenshot, questioning the accuracy of the order’s calculations.
In response to inquiries from Mothership, a Foodpanda spokesperson clarified that the exorbitant “container charges” resulted from an erroneous input in the restaurant partner’s settings. The issue was promptly rectified after briefly appearing on the app.
The spokesperson assured that the customer was not charged for the outrageous amount, putting any concerns to rest.
