14-1-2024 (WASHINGTON) US President Joe Biden has made it clear that the United States does not support Taiwan’s independence, following the recent Taiwanese elections where the ruling party secured a third term. The Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) presidential candidate, William Lai Ching-te, emerged victorious despite Chinese pressure to reject him. Lai has vowed to confront Beijing and engage in dialogue. In response to the election results, President Biden stated, “We do not support independence.”
The US has been a crucial supporter and arms supplier to Taiwan, despite the absence of formal diplomatic relations. Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated Lai on his win and expressed the US commitment to maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. Blinken also emphasized the importance of resolving differences peacefully and without coercion or pressure.
The Biden administration has been cautious about escalating tensions with China, and President Biden has sought to improve relations by engaging in dialogue. In November, he held discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping to address security concerns and bridge differences. However, the Biden administration remains concerned about potential conflicts arising from the election, the transition of power, and the new administration.
Taiwan’s government anticipates that China will increase pressure on the incoming president, including conducting military maneuvers near the island in the coming months. China has never renounced the use of force to reunify Taiwan with the mainland. In a show of support for Taiwan’s government, President Biden is planning to send an unofficial delegation to the self-governed island, consisting of former high-ranking American officials.
It’s worth noting that China was displeased in 2016 when then-President-elect Donald Trump spoke with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen over the phone, breaking with the long-standing tradition of no direct communication between US and Taiwan leaders since 1979.
The United States’ affirmation of not supporting Taiwan’s independence aligns with its One China policy. As the situation in the region continues to evolve, maintaining cross-strait peace and stability will be a priority for the US government.
