9-1-2024 (BERLIN) FIFA and FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed their condolences following the announcement of the death of German football legend Franz Beckenbauer on Monday.
In a statement, FIFA described Beckenbauer, who passed away at the age of 78 on Sunday, as “widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history.” The organization acknowledged his significant contributions to the sport and credited him with pioneering the libero role. Beckenbauer led West Germany to victory in the UEFA Euro 1972 and the 1974 FIFA World Cup, leaving an indelible mark on the game.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino paid tribute to Beckenbauer, stating, “Franz Beckenbauer is a legend of German and world football. His achievements and triumphs are etched in history, yet despite his popularity, ‘Der Kaiser’ always remained humble and grounded.”
Infantino further emphasized that Beckenbauer’s impact would be forever remembered by football fans across the globe, particularly those of the German national team and FC Bayern Munich, with whom he enjoyed immense success. The FIFA President described Beckenbauer as “a truly remarkable individual, a friend of football, a champion, and a genuine legend.” He added, “Dear Franz will never be forgotten.
