4-1-2024 (BEIJING) Beijing expressed “strong dissatisfaction” over the conflict in neighbouring Myanmar that resulted in Chinese casualties. The Chinese government pledged to take “all necessary measures” to protect its citizens after reports indicated that an artillery shell from Myanmar exploded across the border, causing injuries in the Chinese town of Nansan in Yunnan province.
Armed conflict has persisted in Myanmar’s northern Shan state since October, initiated by an alliance of ethnic minority groups launching an offensive against the military junta.
Several Chinese media outlets reported on Wednesday that the artillery shell incident occurred in Nansan, Yunnan province. The reports, along with images shared on social media, were not independently verified by AFP.
Foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin addressed the reports at a regular press briefing, stating that China “expresses strong dissatisfaction that the armed conflict has caused Chinese casualties.” Wang emphasized that Beijing had made “solemn representations to the relevant parties.”
“China once again demands that all parties in the northern Myanmar conflict immediately cease hostilities and take practical measures to prevent further pernicious incidents that endanger peace and tranquillity on the border,” Wang stated. He added that “China will take all necessary measures to safeguard the security of its citizens’ lives and property.”
The spokesman did not specify the number of casualties resulting from the incident.
The ethnic alliance in Myanmar has captured several towns and border hubs critical for trade with China, marking the most significant military challenge to the junta since its seizure of power in 2021.
Last month, Beijing claimed to have mediated talks between the Myanmar military and allied ethnic armed groups, reaching a “temporary ceasefire” agreement. Despite this, clashes persist in parts of Shan state, prompting China’s embassy to advise citizens to evacuate areas along the shared border due to security risks.
