4-1-2024 (SINGAPORE) A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday (January 3) when a 69-year-old woman, who lived alone, collapsed and passed away in her home. The discovery was made only when the odor of decomposing flesh permeated the hallway, prompting concerned neighbors to alert the police. The neighbors revealed that the woman rarely received visitors, especially during the holidays, which raised suspicions about her well-being.
The incident took place around 10 a.m. at a rental unit in Block 19, Telok Blangah Crescent.
Following a public notification about a foul smell emanating from an apartment in the HDB block, the police were seen conducting investigations, leading to speculations of a potential murder. When the reporter from “Shin Min Daily News” arrived at the scene around 3 p.m., the police cordon had been removed, and investigators had left. However, a strong stench lingered in one of the corridors, guiding the reporter to the aforementioned unit.
During interviews with neighbors, Ms. Zheng, a retired 75-year-old, disclosed that the deceased woman was Chinese and had been living alone. Previously, she resided with her elderly mother, but since her mother’s passing over a decade ago, she had been solitary, with no sight of relatives or friends visiting her on weekdays or holidays. Other neighbors confirmed that they had detected a putrid smell as early as Tuesday, but initially dismissed it, assuming it was related to unpleasant food or spoiled meat.
It was only when the odor intensified on Wednesday that the neighbors grew concerned and speculated that the elderly woman might have passed away. They promptly contacted the police, leading to the discovery of the tragic incident.
Upon inquiry, the police confirmed receiving the report. The 69-year-old woman was found lifeless in her unit and was pronounced dead at the scene. Following a preliminary investigation, the police have ruled out the possibility of homicide, although the case remains under investigation.
