4-1-2024 (BEIJING) Chinese model Jessica Du, aged 35, has displayed remarkable resilience and optimism after revealing the amputation of her left hand following an accident. In an Instagram post on December 28, she candidly shared her journey, expressing gratitude for 35 years of companionship with her hand.
Despite the challenges, Jessica’s post exuded positivity as she looked forward to the future, anticipating the installation of a bionic prosthetic arm and a human-brain interface. This, she believes, will lead to a life of human-machine symbiosis and living as a cyborg, illustrating her perspective that the future holds promise.
The accompanying photos portrayed Jessica’s courage, with post-surgery images revealing a shaved head and bandaged hand. In one photo, she kissed her hand, symbolizing appreciation for the companionship it provided over the years. The last image respectfully censored the amputated part of her arm.
While Jessica did not disclose specific details about the accident, she clarified that it did not relate to her adventurous pursuits, such as skydiving, skiing, and freediving. She expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from her followers and mentioned awaiting her third surgery before sharing more about her story.

Jessica acknowledged the initial difficulty in accepting the loss but highlighted the transformative power of human willpower and adaptability. On the fifth day post-amputation, she found acceptance and began embracing the possibilities offered by bionic technology.
However, Jessica admitted to grappling with phantom limb pain, a common sensation among amputees, affecting nearly 79.9% of them. She described the pain as a sensation akin to needles pricking each finger, emphasizing the enduring connection between her physical and phantom limb.
Messages of support flooded Jessica’s Instagram post, with followers expressing admiration for her strength and resilience. Comments ranged from encouraging her smooth recovery to commending her positive outlook, with one netizen playfully noting that she had “reached cyberpunk before anybody else.”
