30-12-2023 (BANGKOK) The body of a 33-year-old Russian man, who had gone missing after being swept away by powerful waves on Koh Samui, was discovered floating on a beach of the popular tourist island. The Russian tourist’s identity has been withheld until his relatives are notified. The body was found at Chawaeng Noi in tambon Bo Phut, as confirmed by Pol Lt Supakit Chanmuang, the deputy investigation chief at the Bo Phut police station. Lt Supakit received an alert about the discovery around 1:45 pm on Saturday.
Following the recovery, the body was promptly taken to Koh Samui hospital for a post-mortem examination. Authorities are making preparations to inform the Russian embassy about the tragic death.
According to the police investigation, the 33-year-old man, along with his two compatriots, Boris Demchenko, 22, and Mariia Dikanskaia, 22, were staying at a hotel in tambon Bo Phut. On Friday midnight, they decided to go for a swim at the beach in front of a nearby hotel.
Unfortunately, while swimming, the Russian tourist ventured too far from the shore and was caught in the grip of strong waves. Realizing the danger, his friends promptly alerted the police for assistance. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to search for the missing man throughout the night, but their efforts proved unsuccessful.
It was only on Saturday afternoon that the lifeless body of the Russian tourist washed ashore, according to the police.
