30-12-2023 (BANGKOK) A shocking scene unfolded on a Bangkok expressway around midnight Saturday as a police officer fatally gunned down a businessman following an apparent dispute. The accused shooter was later arrested after fleeing the expressway, leaving the victim’s distraught family to discover his body.
The tragedy occurred on Chalong Rat expressway in the capital’s Wang Thonglang district. Responders arrived to find the victim, identified as Krit, lying bloodied with five gunshot wounds.
Witnesses said Krit had been quarreling with the shooter before being assaulted and shot multiple times, including in the head. The attacker then drove off in the victim’s van but soon returned to fire more shots at the prone Krit before escaping again.
Nearby expressway staff had tried to intervene earlier but retreated when they saw the man’s gun. They then directed an arriving passenger bus to block the road to protect Krit’s body.
When Krit’s sobbing mother, wife and children reached the scene, they confirmed he and the shooter knew each other. Police identified the suspect as Lt. Narongwat Thachata, a fellow officer.
Authorities believe a personal dispute between the two men, both with connections to law enforcement, led to the fatal confrontation. Later that morning, a police team tracked down and arrested Narongwat at a rented room in northern Bangkok.
