20-12-2023 (SINGAPORE) A Singaporean family of three has been released after an argument with a local man at a dai pai dong, an open-air food stall, resulted in the arrest of all four individuals. Hong Kong police confirmed the nationality of the family in response to queries from CNA on Wednesday (Dec 20). The incident took place at a restaurant on Woosung Street in Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon, after a passer-by reported a dispute around 10.30 pm on Dec 10.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the police revealed that a 50-year-old Hong Kong man surnamed Liu engaged in an argument with a 54-year-old Singaporean man over “noise issues” at the restaurant. It is alleged that Liu attacked the Singaporean man with a glass cup. The Singaporean man suffered head and hand injuries, while Liu sustained injuries to his hand during the altercation. The Singaporean man’s wife, aged 52, and their 17-year-old son were also reportedly involved in the incident and sustained hand injuries. They were all taken to a hospital by ambulance.
Hong Kong police arrested all four individuals on suspicion of assault causing bodily harm. The local man has been released on bail pending further investigation and will be required to report to the police in early January. The three Singaporeans have also been released.
Videos of the incident circulated on social media and were widely reported by Hong Kong media. The footage shows a man in a light blue T-shirt lying on his side while two other men sit on top of him. A woman in a white T-shirt can be seen rushing towards them, shouting, “What are you all doing? Let my husband go!” Additional videos depict the presence of an ambulance and local police at the scene.
The details surrounding the dispute and the events leading up to the altercation remain under investigation by the Hong Kong police.
