20-12-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) What was intended as an unremarkable trip to Johor Bahru turned into a terrifying experience for a 40-year-old Singaporean businessman and his family when his seven-year-old son was nearly abducted by three unknown men.
The incident occurred on December 12, as recounted by the man, surnamed Lin. The family was at No. 5 Jalan Serampang Taman Pelangi, JB, exploring potential workshops for Lin’s business. According to Lin, CCTV footage from a nearby building revealed that his two children were playing outside the workshop while he was inside.
As Lin’s wife briefly stepped away, a gold-coloured car pulled up by the roadside. A man swiftly grabbed the boy and fled into the car. Lin’s daughter rushed into the workshop to alert her parents.
Upon hearing his daughter’s cry for help, Lin rushed outside and discovered his son missing. Desperate to save his child, Lin gave chase to the car, which, according to his daughter, had no visible license plate.
Lin caught up with the car and blocked its path. In an attempt to escape, the kidnappers rammed into the rear of Lin’s car. Undeterred, Lin confronted the kidnappers, breaking the driver’s window to find his son inside with three men.
The kidnappers reversed their car, causing Lin to be thrown off the road, resulting in injuries to his face and arms. Despite this, he continued to pursue them. Ultimately, the kidnappers abandoned the car about 3km from a traffic light.
Fortunately, Lin found his son unharmed in the abandoned vehicle. After reuniting with his son, Lin filed a police report in Johor Bahru and collected CCTV footage showing the car and an individual lurking near the workshop. This person was identified as Lin’s business partner.
Lin believes the kidnapping was financially motivated and orchestrated by his business partner, who hired the three men and rented the gold car. While the Malaysian police apprehended the business partner, the three other men remain at large.
Upon returning to Singapore, Lin filed a police report at Ang Mo Kio South Neighbourhood Police Centre. He has chosen to make the incident public to hold those involved accountable, emphasizing that it was a premeditated act. Lin also expressed reservations about engaging in any business ventures in Malaysia for the foreseeable future.
