16-12-2023 (WASHINGTON) US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has condemned the Hong Kong government’s issuance of red notices under the accusation of violating the Hong Kong National Security Law. He stated that this action unfairly targets overseas democracy advocates, including US citizens and individuals residing in the United States. Blinken argued that this move by the Hong Kong authorities demonstrates their disregard for international norms and the human rights of the people of Hong Kong, eroding the city’s once-proud tradition of the rule of law.
In a press release published on the official website of the State Department on Friday (December 15), Blinken said, “We strongly oppose any threats or silencing of individuals who have chosen the United States as their home and will steadfastly support those who are targeted for exercising their human rights. The United States rejects the People’s Republic of China’s attempts to threaten and harass advocates for freedom and democracy through red notices and calls on the Hong Kong authorities to respect the rights and freedoms protected by the Basic Law.” Blinken further added, “We encourage the international community to join us in condemning these cross-border repression tactics. The United States is committed to defending the rights and freedoms of all individuals and calls on the People’s Republic of China to act in accordance with its international commitments and legal obligations.”
