14-12-2023 (SINGAPORE) Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is set to embark on a four-day working visit to Tokyo, Japan, where he will attend a summit commemorating 50 years of relations between Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The visit takes place from December 15 to 18, and marks a significant milestone in the partnership between the two regions.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Mr. Lee will attend the Commemorative Summit for the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, where leaders from both regions will discuss ways to deepen and broaden the ASEAN-Japan Dialogue Partnership. The summit will cover emerging areas such as the digital and green economies, as well as regional and global issues of mutual concern.
The summit will be co-chaired by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Indonesian President Joko Widodo, and is expected to result in a joint statement and implementation plan outlining a new vision for the future of ASEAN-Japan relations.
During his visit, Mr. Lee will also hold bilateral meetings with Mr. Kishida and other Japanese officials. He will be accompanied by his wife, Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan, and other officials.
In Mr. Lee’s absence, Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean will serve as Acting Prime Minister.
