12-12-2023 (SINGAPORE) The lifeless body of a 20-year-old man was discovered in the waters off East Coast Park on Monday (11 Dec) by authorities. Another individual was also found alive but opted not to be taken to the hospital.
According to preliminary investigations, the police do not suspect foul play in the incident, although investigations are still ongoing.
The incident came to the attention of the police at approximately 7:10 PM on Sunday (10 Dec) when they received a report of a suspected drowning. The body of the 20-year-old man was recovered from the waters off East Coast Park on 11 Dec.
The police have ruled out foul play as a possible cause of death after conducting initial investigations. However, they continue to gather information and investigate the incident.
A picture provided by a reader to Lianhe Zaobao shows park-goers gathered near a blue tent set up on the shore, with the area cordoned off and uniformed officers present. The exact circumstances leading to the incident, including whether the deceased and his friend had gone swimming at sea, have yet to be confirmed by official authorities.
Meanwhile, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed that they received an alert regarding the same incident at the same time on 10 Dec. The SCDF conducted a water rescue operation in search of two individuals reported missing in the waters near East Coast Park, close to East Coast Lagoon Food Village.
Firefighters, the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART), and marine vessels were deployed by the SCDF to locate the missing individuals. With assistance from the Police Coast Guard, one of the individuals was found 50 meters from the shore in the seawater.
The rescued individual received medical assessment from an SCDF paramedic but declined to be taken to the hospital.
