10-12-2023 (BANGKOK) four out of six teachers and two students accused of prolonged sexual abuse of three female students in Mukdahan have received life sentences, according to Thicha Nanakorn, an adviser to the Child, Youth, and Family Foundation.
The foundation, alongside local partners, initiated support for the victims in 2020, guiding them through the pursuit of criminal and civil charges against eight teachers and students. The provincial court, agreeing to hear the case, issued a ruling on July 1, 2020, as per Thicha’s Facebook post on Saturday.
The Mukdahan provincial court, in a ruling handed down on Friday, convicted six parties involved in the sexual abuse. Thicha emphasized that the student victims were all under 15 years old when the abuse commenced.
Two teachers were given the benefit of the doubt due to insufficient evidence to establish their involvement.
In addition to the life sentences, the convicted parties were jointly ordered to pay financial compensation of approximately 3 million baht, along with 7.5% interest per year, to the victims, Thicha stated.
Thicha Nanakorn expressed her intention to engage in discussions with Education Minister Pol Gen Permpoon Chidchob to explore measures to prevent the recurrence of similar sexual assaults.
The Mukdahan case revealed repeated abuse of the students occurring between May 16, 2019, and March 4, 2020, at the residence of one of the convicted teachers.
