4-12-2023 (BANGKOK) As tensions rise in Myanmar, the Thai government has declared its readiness to construct shelters along the border to accommodate potential refugees if the situation worsens. Foreign Affairs Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara confirmed the government’s preparedness, emphasizing the need for a diplomatic resolution to cease hostilities.
Addressing the situation on Sunday, the minister asserted that the government is closely monitoring developments in Myanmar and is urging all concerned parties to engage in negotiations promptly. While the influx of refugees is currently deemed unlikely, the government acknowledges the possibility if violence escalates, with refugees potentially seeking safety in various directions beyond Thailand.
“There might be refugees going in all directions, not only towards Thailand,” remarked Mr. Parnpree.
He clarified that, as of now, there have been no reports of a proxy war in Myanmar. Recent reports indicated fighting between Myanmar government forces and ethnic troops in Myawadee, located about 10 kilometres from Mae Sot district in Tak province, adjacent to the Thai-Myanmar border. Stranded businesspeople and cargo trucks have been reported in the border town due to the ongoing conflict.
Lt Gen Prasarn Saengsirirak, the commander of the 3rd Army, assured that the current situation in Myanmar has not impacted Thailand. However, he affirmed that if refugees cross the border, Thailand is prepared to provide humanitarian aid. Thai soldiers are on standby to protect the country’s territory, and cooperation with the Myanmar junta aims to prevent any infringement on Thai soil.
As regional tensions persist, Thailand remains vigilant and responsive to potential humanitarian challenges resulting from the situation in Myanmar.
