4-12-2023 (JAKARTA) A person has lost their life, and 11 individuals remain missing following flash floods near Lake Toba in Indonesia’s North Sumatra province, as reported by the country’s disasters agency, BNPB. The incident prompted the evacuation of numerous people, with ongoing rescue efforts in full swing.
On the evening of December 1, heavy rainfall triggered flash floods in the region situated along the shores of Lake Toba, causing extensive damage to dozens of houses, a church, a school, and a hotel, as per BNPB’s statement issued late on Saturday.
Lake Toba, renowned as the world’s largest volcanic lake, is a popular tourist destination attracting both Indonesians and international visitors alike.
The flash floods brought down substantial stones, trees, and mud from hillsides, resulting in some houses being submerged up to the roof, as depicted in images released by the agency.
Approximately 350 individuals, equipped with heavy machinery, are actively engaged in search and rescue operations, while around 200 people have already been successfully evacuated, according to the agency’s updates.
