3-12-2023 (MANILA) A tragic incident unfolded on December 3 when an explosion disrupted a Catholic mass in a gymnasium at Mindanao State University in the southern Philippines, resulting in three fatalities and nine people sustaining injuries, as confirmed by the police.
The authorities are actively investigating the explosion, with Brigadier General Allan Nobleza, the regional police director, addressing reporters. He mentioned that one potential motive being explored is the possibility of revenge by pro-Islamic State militants. The blast took place in Marawi, a city that witnessed a five-month siege by Islamist militants in 2017.
On December 2, the Philippine military reported the killing of 11 militants, including members of Dawlah Islamiyah-Philippines, a pro-Islamic State group, in a military operation in Maguindanao del Sur province.
Governor Mamintal Adiong Jr. of Lanao del Sur condemned the violent bombing incident, stating in a released statement, “Terroristic attacks on educational institutions must also be condemned because these are places that promote the culture of peace.”
Expressing deep sorrow, Mindanao State University released a statement on Facebook, saying, “We unequivocally condemn in the strongest possible terms this senseless and horrific act.” The university announced the suspension of classes until further notice.
