1-12-2023 (SINGAPORE) Local actress Julie Tan surprised fans and followers on Wednesday (Nov 29) when she unexpectedly shared a video on her Instagram Stories of herself shaving her head. Accompanied by the caption “Good goodbye to my hair,” the 31-year-old former Mediacorp star unveiled her bold transformation.
It turns out that Tan had shaved her head for her upcoming role in the local film “Good Goodbye,” a movie centered around palliative care. The cast includes Julie Tan, Tosh Zhang, Andie Chen, and Shane Pow.
The video clip showcases Tan, who portrays a social worker battling cancer in the film, giving a thumbs up and displaying remarkable composure as her hair is gradually shaved off.
In an interview with Chinese media outlet 8world, Tan revealed that she did not view shaving her head as a sacrifice but rather as fulfilling her responsibilities as an actress. She eagerly accepted the role, recognizing it as a rare opportunity that she couldn’t pass up.
“It’s such a good opportunity to shave my head bald, why not? I think I’ve always given people the girl-next-door impression. Now there’s a role for me to appear on screen bald, it’s really a rare chance,” she expressed.
When Tan’s mother and friends expressed concern about her decision, her response remained steadfast: “I’ve never done anything that I would regret!”
This bold move is considered one of Tan’s significant breakthroughs since she embarked on her showbiz career in 2008. While she has previously portrayed characters with unconventional appearances, the experience of completely shaving her head was beyond her imagination.
“I’ve tried playing ugly characters, but this time I had to completely shave my head. This is something I would have never imagined,” she shared. Tan confidently stated that she doesn’t anticipate missing her long hair.
“My personality is such that I can easily let go of things. To me, there’s nothing in this world that I can’t bear to part with. Life is neither too long nor too short, so the most important thing is to live in the moment and be happy,” Tan remarked.
When asked about her initial reaction upon seeing her bald head, she expressed genuine fondness for her new appearance. “I really liked it. In fact, I feel like Julie Tan in her most authentic state now,” she declared.
An added benefit of having no hair? Tan now saves a significant amount of time in the shower. While her showers used to take 20 minutes, she now completes them in just five.
