18-11-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) In a joint statement issued on Saturday (November 18), Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia have called for an immediate, lasting, and sustainable humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip to halt hostilities.
According to Reuters, the joint statement was released after Sultan Bolkiah of Brunei, President Joko of Indonesia, and Prime Minister Anwar of Malaysia attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Meeting on November 17 in San Francisco, USA.
While welcoming the APEC Leaders’ “Declaration of the Strait of Malacca,” the three economic entities decided to issue a statement on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict given the APEC Chair’s statement on the Ukraine invasion.
The statement reads, “We, the three parties, agree to issue this statement to better and fairly reflect discussions during the APEC Leaders’ Informal Meeting regarding the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip.”
“We wish to emphasize that this conflict may have significant implications for the global economy. We urge for an immediate, lasting, and sustainable humanitarian ceasefire, putting an end to hostilities in the Gaza Strip,” the statement reiterates. “A just and lasting resolution to the Israel-Palestine conflict can only be achieved through peaceful means, in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions such as the UN General Assembly A/ES-10/L.25 draft resolution and United Nations Security Council resolutions. Based on UN Security Council Resolution 2712 and in accordance with international law, a two-state solution should be pursued, with the pre-1967 borders and East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.”
The 30th APEC Leaders’ Informal Meeting concluded at the Moscone Center in San Francisco on November 17.
